Role overview

The OCO invites applications from interested candidates for the position of Communications and Social Media Officer (EO). The successful candidate will play a key role in increasing awareness of the Ombudsman for Children’s Office, as well as awareness of children’s rights through social media and online.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the following principal duties as part of the Communications team:

  • Designing and implementing weekly and monthly social media plans

  • Creating social media campaigns to support and run alongside OCO events and publications

  • Creating web pages and preparation of media content related the OCO

  • On/off site, remote (including out of hours) audio, image and video capture and gathering (including identification of appropriate materials for rebroadcast)

  • Filming video footage and taking photographs at launches/events for posting on the site

  • Maintenance, quality assurance and innovation concerning site production values

  • Researching, filming and editing content for the OCO website and social media channels

  • Monitoring news and current affairs, as well as relevant social media accounts

  • Assisting the OCO Communications team with policy launches and press conferences

  • Supporting the Communications teams on other OCO work

  • Any other tasks assigned by your manager

Essential Requirements

The successful candidate must have: 

  • A qualification of at least a Level 7 on the National Framework of Qualifications in Journalism, Multi Media/Communications or related discipline,

And

  • Demonstrate at least 2 years relevant experience of working in this area

  • Have experience of using and updating social media - such as Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook

  • Be interested in public affairs and committed to the concept of public service

  • Be sensitive in dealing with others, and be persuasive when communicating in general

  • Be committed to making sure all tasks are completed to a very high standard

  • Be willing to share ideas and information with people, with the purpose of achieving a particular result

  • The ability to work as part of a team

  • Be capable of presenting material in a clear, concise and comprehensive manner

  • Be fully committed to achieving quality results

  • Be capable of using own initiative as and when appropriate

  • The ability to work to tight deadlines and under pressure

 

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience in Non-Linear Editing Systems i.e. Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro;

  • Experience in the use of Photoshop and Creative Cloud;

  • Familiarity with Motion Graphics packages such as Apple Motion or After Effects

  • Demonstrable experience in Graphic Design would be an advantage;

  • Experience in using Lightroom for photo cataloguing and post production;

  • A good understanding of children’s rights and the workings of the Oireachtas;
